Checklist

I think that there should be a customizable checklist that you can open in
the task pane. This way, before you start writing a paper you can enter in
all of the things you need to talk about, and then check them off as you
write your paper.

It sounds to me as if you should be using Microsoft OneNote to prepare for
writing your papers.
