At the bottom of the Citations editing dialog box, you can add comments. How do you get those to print with your bibliography? It is ideal for an annotated bibliography.

Good idea. Use Send Feedback under the Help menu to request MS offer an
Annotated Bibliography format under the Document Elements Insert
Bibliography option.

It is possible to customize the Bibliography Format, a couple people
have reported getting installing a custom format to work. I'm pretty
sure that someone who knows their way around XML could write a custom
format that included the comments. But that's not me, and discussion on
this board of customizing the formats has made it sound a bit tricky. I
do not know where to find those people who could make this work. It is
possible, since WinWord and MacWord do use the same custom format files,
that someone has written one on the Windows side.

Yet another reason why I recommend a dedicated program like Bookends,
EndNote, Sente, etc for grad students and academics. The Word Citations
feature just doesn't make it easy to do much beyond the basics.
