Anyone have a good formula or setup to doing a simple Checkbook
register in Excel?

You can get one from Microsoft:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TC010186511033.aspx

follow the links - the template's a WinXL template in .cab format. When
you download it, use Stuffit Expander to expand the file to an .xlt XL
template file.

A basic setup might be:

A B C D E F
1 Ck # Date Description Deposit Ck/WD Balance

Then in column F enter:

F2: =SUM(D2:E2)
F3: =IF(COUNT(D3:E3),F2+D3-E3,"")

copy F3 down as far as desired.

I never thought to look on Microsoft's web site. Is there a template
for Mac? I can not seem to find one.

Doesn't appear to be, but that WinXL template seems to work fine in
MacXL based on some very light testing.
