Client vs server rules

How do you change rules to read form the server rather than the client?

Thanks,
Mich

It's controlled by outlook and depends on the wording of the rule - you have
little control over it. http://www.slipstick.com/rules/serverbased.htm

The reason I asked is that we have moved our email from an old Windows
Server 2000 to a new Windows Server 2000 with Exchange 2000. Now,
when an email comes in that should be taken care of by a rule, I get a
message about Rules in Error, and it lists the rule the message applies
to and says the folder to move/copy to doesn't exist. It does.

If I try to open the Rules with the Rules Wizard, I get a message:

The Rules on this Machine Do Not Match the Rules on Your Exchange Server.
Only one set of rules can be kept. You will usually want to keep the rules
on the server. Which rules do you want to keep?

and I have to choose either the Client or the Server as the location of the
rules. I choose Server. My rules are there but all disabled except the
three standard junk senders, adult senders and exceptions rules.

The Microsoft site has two articles about this message, both for Outlook
2002. They say I have rules on two machines. I opened Outlook 2000 on the
other machine I use occasionally and there are no rules for Client or Server
on that machine; none at all.

If I try to activate any more of the rules on my current PC, I get a
message:
There is not enough space on the Microsoft Exchange Server to store all of
your rules. The rules that failed to upload have been deactivated.

All but three are deactivated, always.

The new server has about 85 GB free space, and our IT folks at HQ who
maintain the Domains say they have placed no restrictions on the amount of
anything on our Exchange Server. The 3 rules come nowhere close to the 32
KB limit set in Exchange.

Email is being sent to my Exchange Mailbox. None of my rules use
forwarding, they all move email to one of my Inbox subfolders.

So how do I convince the machine that I am using now that I want to use all
of my rules, and that they are maintained on the server?

Thanks,
Mich

Ok... to make sure I understand - you are using two versions of Outlook and
one is Ol2000? The errors you see are common if you use two versions on the
same mailbox.

Export the rules from the newer version of outlook then run outlook using
/cleanrules switch and import the rules into outlook. (There is also a
/cleanserverrules switch, but it might only be fore 2003.) If you ever use
an older version never let it update the rules (I close the dialog without
accepting either choice). You may need to use the switch using both ol2000
and 2003/2003 - you need to make sure the rules are gone before you import.

I tried your suggestion using this as the syntax:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OUTLOOK.EXE" /cleanrules
but the error I get is
The command line argument is not valid. Verify the switch you are using.

Maybe this is only for OL2002 or 2003?

I had been using an older PC using Windows 98 and Outlook 98, then moved to
a newer PC using Win2000 and OL2000 about 2 weeks ago. However, nothing
went wrong with the rules until a week later we put in a new server. Do I
need to crank up the old PC and do something with Outlook on that to fix the
rules? I hadn't planned on using that PC any more, probably formatting it
and putting 2000 on it.

I think when I was asked which set of rules to use that I chose server, not
knowing the consequence of this.

Meanwhile I can't get any rules to work at all. Any other ideas Diane?
Thanks,
Mich
