Clipart in Mac Word does not open

I just downloaded the 2008 Word for Mac trial. I like to download clipart
from microsoft.com. Downloading works, but I am unable to open any of the
clipart. My computer says: "Unreadable Files: The following file could not
be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)" Most of the files
have a .cil extension. Please help me open my clipart!

I would like to add that I'm using Mac OS X Version 10.6.1 Snow Leopard.
This is a brand-new imac computer. My default browser is Safari.

If you have just installed the trial it may need to be updated... In Word go
to the Help menu & choose "Check for Updates" in order to get to the 12.2.1
update level. Repair Disk Permissions after updating & restart the Mac.

If you still have a problem reply with specific details of your step-by-step
actions once the .cil file has been downloaded.

I checked updates and it says it's updated. It says 12.2.0. The first thing
that happens when I try to insert clipart into a word document by going
online I get the following message: "Safari can't verify the identity of the
website 'services.office.microsoft.com'. You might be connecting to a
website that is pretending to be 'services.office.microsoft.com', which could
put your confidential information at risk. Would you like to connect to the
website anyway?" I always click "continue". It goes right into the website.
I pick the clipart I want and download it. Once the .cil file is downloaded,
I double-click on it. It then says "'ClipArt [CUBNX].cil' may be an
application. It was downloaded from the Internet and will be opened by
iphoto. Are you sure you want to open it?" When I say "open" it says
"Unreadable Files: The following file could not
be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)
/Users/snakysmom/Downloads/ClipArt [CUBNX].cil. I'm doing everything right
according to all the articles. There is nothing in "favorites".

OK, the details you've furnished indicate that .cil files - not common to
the Mac - are being associated with the wrong application [iPhoto].
Control/Right-Click one of the .cil files, select Get Info from the shortcut
menu, the open the Open With section of the Get Info dialog box. Select
Microsoft Clip Gallery.app from the dropdown list then click the Change All
button. See if that makes a difference.

Okay...wait a minute...I went back into Word and tried pasting those clips
from favorites in and now it's not working. They don't work whether I drag
them in or click "insert". All of a sudden they stopped working! I just
found out I can open them in "Pages" but not in "Word". What happened?

I just noticed the "Elements Gallery" is grayed out at the top of the toolbar
in "Word". Does that have anything to do with it? I can't get it back to
bold. Please read what I wrote below:

When I open Word,
it always opens in "draft" view.

When you launch Word it creates a new blank document based on the View you
were using when you last Quit the program.

If you've never repaired disk permissions I'd recommend that you go ahead &
do so. It can't hurt anything & may help avoid issues in the future. It's a
standard procedure which should be done any time you install/update software
or the OS.

As for the Clip Art, if the only reason you thought you had a problem is
that you couldn't see it because you were in Draft or Outline View I'd ay
you're good to go :)

OK, the details you've furnished indicate that .cil files - not common
to
the Mac - are being associated with the wrong application [iPhoto].
Control/Right-Click one of the .cil files, select Get Info from the
shortcut
menu, the open the Open With section of the Get Info dialog box. Select
Microsoft Clip Gallery.app from the dropdown list then click the Change
All
button. See if that makes a difference.

I checked updates and it says it's updated. It says 12.2.0. The first
thing
that happens when I try to insert clipart into a word document by going
online I get the following message: "Safari can't verify the identity
of
the
website 'services.office.microsoft.com'. You might be connecting to a
website that is pretending to be 'services.office.microsoft.com', which
could
put your confidential information at risk. Would you like to connect
to
the
website anyway?" I always click "continue". It goes right into the
website.
I pick the clipart I want and download it. Once the .cil file is
downloaded,
I double-click on it. It then says "'ClipArt [CUBNX].cil' may be an
application. It was downloaded from the Internet and will be opened by
iphoto. Are you sure you want to open it?" When I say "open" it says
"Unreadable Files: The following file could not
be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)
/Users/snakysmom/Downloads/ClipArt [CUBNX].cil. I'm doing everything
right
according to all the articles. There is nothing in "favorites".

:

If you have just installed the trial it may need to be updated... In
Word
go
to the Help menu & choose "Check for Updates" in order to get to the
12.2.1
update level. Repair Disk Permissions after updating & restart the
Mac.

If you've never repaired disk permissions I'd recommend that you go ahead &
do so. It can't hurt anything & may help avoid issues in the future. It's a
standard procedure which should be done any time you install/update software

As for the Clip Art, if the only reason you thought you had a problem is
that you couldn't see it because you were in Draft or Outline View I'd ay
you're good to go :)

So then I no longer have a problem with my clipart? I don't need to do

I haven't run Disk Utility-Repair Disk Permissions because when I go into
that file there are two things to choose from: 320.07 GB Hitachi HDT7... or
Macintosh HD. Which one should I click on?

It doesn't matter -- Notice that the one is indented beneath the other...
They're both the same thing so select either one.

Also, I just discovered this
morning that if I'm in Word I can SEE the clips in "web layout" and "print
layout" views but not in "draft" view or "outline" view.

That is typical behavior in Word -- Graphic object do not display in those
views. They're intended to expedite working with only the text content.

When I open Word,
it always opens in "draft" view.

When you launch Word it creates a new blank document based on the View you
were using when you last Quit the program.

Should I be concerned with the result of running Repair Disk Permissions?
Here is what it said: "Permissions differ on 'private/etc/postfix...ould be
-rw-r--r--, they are -r--r--r--. Repaired
'private/etc/postfix/main.cf.default'. Warning: SUID file
"System/Library/CoreS...as been modified and will not be repaired. Warning:

Permissions repair complete." On the "will not be repaired" parts, am I able
to go in and fix something that might have been changed and wasn't supposed
to be changed?

No need for any concern whatsoever... Everything you describe is perfectly
normal. If you ever get a "*Cannot* be repaired" response it would be cause
for concern. The one you're getting pertains to OS updating that has taken
place since installation & you definitely don't want to change that.
