Clipboard loosing information

When I copy data from a non-office application, and then open and attempt to
paste it to any of the office suite programs (such as word or excell), the
paste function is greyed-out and cntrl-V doesn't work.

If I go back again to the original application and copy and paste again, it
will work properly. It is only when I startup an office application that my
clipboard gets wiped out.

Anyone know what triggers this bug?

Hi Joe,

A common cause of this is a 3rd party add-in that kicks in when you start an Office application and clears the Windows clipboard.
For Word, one of the common ones is the MS Works Suite to Word add-in.

WD: The Windows Clipboard Content is Modified When Word Starts

Thank you for the reference to that help file (I searched for at least an
hour, but apparently didn't use the right terms). However, I just went
through all of it. I don't have the Microsoft Works tools installed and the
only COM that was there was a load-on-demand support for euorpean fonts. I
removed it, but to no avail.

Any other ideas?

I have some more infomation. I recall that on occasion, upon exiting Word, I
occasionally get a window saying that I've made changes to the Normal.dot
template, and asking if I want to save the changes.

I've never deliberately opened or made changes to that template, so always
say no. I've performed a search of my entire hard drive, and no such file
exists.

Also, I perfomed a search for the "startup" folder mentioned on the
Microsoft troubleshooting document mentioned earlier. The few folders that
are found do not apply to Microsoft office (or any of its components) or are
completely empty.

Note that I do have administrator privledges, and have set my file explorer
to show all files, even hidden ones.

If you are encountering a prompt to save Normal.dot each time you exit
Word then you do have an add-in that modifies Normal.dot when Word
starts and chances are it is also clearing your Clipboard.

I know you went through the steps in the KB article that Paul pointed
you to but as I noted at the bottom, "All COM Add-ins may not display
in the COM Add-ins dialog box as it only displays add-ins which are
installed per user." So if you didn't find the offending add-in then
it's likely a "per machine" add-in which can be a little more
difficult to find. :-(

I hate to point you to yet another KB article but this one contains a
section with step-by-step instructions for locating COM Add-ins that
are installed per machine. It covers similar information as the other
article so all you really need is the section titled: "How can I
determine all the add-ins that Word loads when it starts?":
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA011514521033.aspx

Also, Normal.dot is stored in a hidden folder so if you don't have
Windows Search set to search hidden files/folders and if you aren't
viewing hidden files/folders then you will not locate it using Search.
Typically it will be located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates

However, Normal.dot isn't the cause - it's an add-in so right now you
don't need to do anything with Normal.dot but I thought this
information might be useful to you for future reference. :)
