Close or deactivate subproject source projects

When I extract data from subprojects into Excel, for example, Project
Standard 2003 opens each subproject's source project and its source project
VBA Project is represented in the VBE Explorer Window. By the time I do this
a few dozen times the application is running very slow. Even having them
listed in the master file as read only doesn't help.
It seems that it must be possible to close the subproject source projects
because the application does this when I open the master file in the first
place.
Can I close the subproject source projects without closing the master file?
