Closing a window

For some mysterious reason, the little black "x" under the big red "x" in the upper right hand corner, which allows me to close a single open Outlook message but leave Outlook as a whole (and all other messages) open, has disappeared. (I'm stuck going to "file" and "close" if I want to close a single message, which I think is a pain.) Any ideas on how to bring it back?
