Closing Word 2000

Hi,
Whenever I close Word I received the prompt, "You have performed an illegal
operation and will be shut down etc." If I close all is well.
If I am in a document I have generated and try to save it I receive the
prompt, The file is in use by another application or user. (
C:\windows\...template\Normal.dot). If I hit OK it wants to save as a
template or a change in the template normal.dot.
I have removed the files in Word start up and deselected the office plug in
under advanced options in Norton.
Any new ideas will be appreciated.
