New to excel. How do I "name" or "label" columns, instead of A, B, C...? A
quick step-by-step is much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Fran

You have to wait until Excel 2007, then the names are part of an active
table. Otherwise you're "stuck" with A,B,C,... or 1,2,3...
However, you can ASSIGN a name (insert/name/define) to a column, like MyCol
refers to E:E, for example.

This cannot be done but there is an appearance workaround.

Enter your labels in row 1

Select A2 and Window>Freeze Panes.

Tools>Options>View. Uncheck "row and column headers".

Hi Fran,

you put your own labels in row 1. You can embolden and center these, as
well as setting the background colour to grey using the formatting
icons.

Then click Tools | Options | View (tab) and uncheck Row and Column
Headers. You will still refer to cells as B2, for example, in any
formula. You might like to put consecutive numbers down column A, so
that you can still see which row you are on.

Hope this helps.

Pete
