Column question...please help!

When separating a page into columns - within my document - I will highlight
the page and select 'Two' under the column tab. In some cases, it will only
separate the first half of the page into two columns.

More often, it will give me a full column on the left hand side of the page,
but only let me type down a quarter to one half of the right column. There's
usually light blue 'boxes' on the right column, which denote where the text
will stop at before it flips to the next page, or begins appearing on the
bottom of the left column.

What am I doing wrong? Please help! Thanks!

If you select text before using Format | Columns, then only the selected
text is put into multiple columns, and Word automatically inserts Continuous
section breaks before and after that section. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/UsingColumns.htm. Text flow within
columns will be affected by (a) column breaks (Ctrl+Shift+Enter), (b) "Keep
with next" or "Keep lines together" formatting, and (c) whether or not
columns are balanced (a Compatibility Options setting).
