Column Sizing

Word 2007. How does one size columns? With my previous version of Word, I
simply created the # of columns needed and then just draged the margins to
the size I needed. Now when I try that, it changes the size of all columns to
make them all equal size! Surely there must still be an equally simple way to
do this - please?

Hi P.,

If you're using Word 2007 Columns (Page Layout=>Columns) then you can drag the margins on the ruler (View=>Ruler or click on the top
of the vertical scroll bar) as in prior versions.

you can also use the Columns dialog to manually set the width of each column (Page Layout=>Columns=>More Columns by turning off the
'Equal Column Width' checkbox.

Bob,

I guess I didn't make my situation clear. I AM doing just what you suggest!
For example, I create three columns. I try and darg the left column margin of
the first column and both the leftand right margins of all three columns
adjust so that the colomns all stay the same size! So, how do I correct this?

Thank you Suzanne, that WAS the problem. FYI, since I indicated I was using
Word 2007, it would have been more helpful if you'd given me these
instructions:

Page Layout | Columns | More Columns | and clear the "Equal column width"
check box? And note for the programmers, as with most things in Word 2007,
you've added another step to the process!

Sorry, your reference to Word 2007 was below the bottom of the window in
which I was writing my reply. Glad you found it anyway!

It seems to me that in Word 2003 dragging column boundaries will unset that
setting, but I'm probably wrong. In many cases, it isn't checked to begin
with, and that causes even worse problems.

Hi Paul,

FWIW, in the reply I gave it was the instructions for Word 2007 and did mention turning off the equal column width check box in the
location you just mentioned.
