I have figured out how to make multiple columns in a document, but is there
a way to force text into the next column regardless of what I do in the
first one? Right now I'm adding lots of <returns> to get the text into
column 2, but then when I edit the layout of column one I have text getting
sucked from the top of column two to the bottom of column one.

Ctrl+Shift+Enter will insert a column break (same as Insert | Break | Column
break)
