Combining presentations

Is there a way to combine multiple presentations into one presentation and keep the backgrounds of the individual slides?

Only if you have PPT 2002 (XP) or 2003. However, you MUST click the option
to "Keep source formatting" for it to work. It isn't a default option.
Prior versions only allow one design per presentation, even though there are
