Combo box display

I have a combo box on a form that takes its information from a table that has
about 1.2 million records. What I have found out is that the combo box, is

1. Very slow, even though the field it is retrieving its information is
indexed, and
2. It does not display records after a particular number.

Is there any advice I could receive both to display all the records in the
table, as well as to speed up the search?
