Combo Box Problem

I have Excel 2003 and I have a worksheet with many combo boxes on it.
Unfortunately they were all built in error and I need to delete them.
I have been unable to do so.

I've diplayed the Control Toolbar, entered Design Mode and pressed the
ComboBox button with the cursor in the cell that contains the box.
Pressing the Delete key does nothing!

What am I not doing correctly?
