Combo box question

I have a simple question that I am hoping someone has a solution to.

I have a unbound combo box that if no information is entered (is left
blank), when the focus is gone, thje bombo box appears grayed out. I
don't think I've done anything to make this behavior happen. Does
anyone know of a solution?

If this is Access 2007, this hotfix might solve it:

If you cannot apply the hotfix, a workaround is to set AlternateBackColor
property of (Detail?) Section to something other than "No Color", e.g.
#80000027
