commandbarpopup failed?

Windows 2K Pro, Office 2K. Somewhile back I started getting a Visual Basic
error when starting Word by clicking on a doc. The error is:

"Method 'controls' of object 'commandbarpopup' failed".

I'm assuming it's VBA only because the error box has "Visual Basic" at the
top. After clicking on the box, the doc then comes up. When I start word
from a shortcut (i.e., not with a doc) it opens uneventfully and I can find
and open docs with no problems.

I have no VBA so I doubt it's anything I've done to it. I've tried repairing
Office and even reinstalling Word/Office but the error persists, so I assume
it must be in some related windows DLL I'm not aware of. Rightly or wrongly
I didn't uninstall Office first, but I don't mind trying that.

Anyone seen this error and hopefully know what's causing it so I can make it
go away??

Thanks!

Thanks Anne! I found PDFMaker.dot in the startup folder, moved it out as a
test, but I still got the error. I then renamed the two copies of normal.dot
that I found, and again, this didn't fix it. I then renamed the registry
key, and once again, this didn't fix it :( Interestingly, however, doing the
Shift/Open trick to bypass VB DID eliminate the error on testing, which
tells me the problem must be in VBA. However, I still don't know how to fix
it :(

I guess the only thing left is to do a "scorched earth" uninstall and start
from scratch?? :(

Hi, Elaine!
Likely you've got something in your Word startup folders. See about them
in Step 4 of Word Troubleshooting:

Anne, I uninstalled Office and reinstalled it, but I'm still getting the VB
error message upon opening a doc outside of Word. Is there a way to
reinstall VBA? Or does it come with Office?

Now, I do have to admit that when I uninstalled Office (the first time I've
had to do this), apparently not everything goes away, since after the
reinstall, I still had all my settings and Outlook contacts intact, which
rather mystifies me. I remember there is a utility to completely erase all
traces of Office 97 from a system--is there such a utility for Office 2K? I
also still have a couple of older Office 97 programs, namely Access
97--could this have messed it up too?

Thanks

UPDATE: I did find the eraser2K, and ran it, plus I ran eraser97, and got
rid of just about everything I could find in the folders and the registry,
scorched earth indeed. I then reinstalled just Word 2K, tried opening a doc,
and I *STILL* get the VBA error message. I give up. I'm not sure what to do
now, or where to turn :( Can't anyone help? :(

To review, the error message I'm getting is on Windows 2K Pro, Office 2K.

Thanks to Cindy Meister in another ng who pointed me towards what turned out
to be the problem. She suggested I doublecheck the Tools/Options/File
locations to verify where my word startup was. I had originally looked in
WinExp under the PF/MO/Office startup folder, and it was empty. Well, duh :)
Come to find out, the REAL startup folder happened to be under the
Application Data folder, and when I checked it, sure enough, there were 3
..dot files there. I removed them, then moved them back individually, and one
of them, a template added by Documents To Go, a PDA application I run,
turned out to be the culprit. With that one out of the folder, Word now
works flawlessly, at least upon startup :)

Thanks to all who wrote!
