communicator time out

When in a chat and nobody enters text for 10 minutes, the chat will
disconnect. The chat window would be open but state "Your instant message
session was disconnected."

If you enter text and send to the chat, it opens up another chat window so
you now have 2 windows. Both windows show active with the same members in it.

Is there a way to stop the second window from opening?
Also can you change the disconnect time?
