Compatibility Pack Issue

I'm attempting to install the compatibility pack for office 2003. The system
has all windows updates, office is completely updated, and the pack installs.
However, after installation i get the following errors.

On attempting to open a docx file:
"This is a pre-release version of the Compatibility Pack and can open
pre-release 2007 files only. Do you want to check for a newer version of the
Compatability Pack?"

On attempting to save as Office 2007:
"There was an error opening the file."

Any ideas as to why this is occurring? I've attempted uninstalling and
reinstalling to no avail.

Thanks,
Jason R. Swinehart

Where did you obtain this compatibility pack? From Office Downloads? The one on Office Downloads is the released version and not the beta version.

Hi Jason,

Are you using documents that were created in one of the Office 2007 beta editions and was the beta on this computer? The Office
2007 beta2 files may not open with the compatibility pack.

Something is definitely going on with the Compatibility Pack. I am testing
using files created in the final release of Word 2007. On most of my
machines, they open fine in Office 2003 with the latest Compatibility Pack.
But on one machine (sadly, it's the master image that I am updating for
deployment to my new employee machines), opening a Word 2007 file produces
the "...this is a pre-release version of the Compatibility Pack".

The version of Word 2003 is 11.8125.8122 (SP2).

Please see my other post for more details.

The compatibility pack was version 2.0 release 11/6/06 which was off the
office site yes. I dont believe that the file was from a beta 2 release and
also even trying to save as the 2007 format was not working.

Hi David,

If you start Word in Office safe mode (hold control key while starting) and create a new document can you save that as a Word 2007
document without a problem?

If you then turn on the [x] confirm conversions at open in
Tools=>Options=>General and use File=>Open on the same document that had the problem does it open? Does the test file you just
created open?

Are the files being saved on the local PC hard drive or on a network or mapped drive?

If you use Start=>Search and recycle all files found using
~$*.*;*.tmp
then starting Word
do you get the same problem.

I am deploying the pack as an MSI but get the message "This is a pre-release version of the Compatibility Pack and can open pre-release Office 2007 files only. Do you want to check for a newer version of the Compatibility Pack?".

Thing is that I am testing files using Word 2007 RTM and Compatibility Pack version 12.0.4518.1014. If I install the .exe file manually everything works fine. Is there a MSI property that needs to be set to do this?

I was plagued with this problem under Vista. I just upgraded to Windows 7 (Home Premium) and uninstalled the compatibility pack, downloaded it again from Microsoft, and reinstalled it. That seemed to fix it! I can now read docx files in Office XP (just as I used to be able to under Windows XP). The files are a bit slow to convert, but they do open.

Bob,

I'm having this same problem - a file in W2007 that I could open in W2002 no longer does. I've tried removing the kb973904, editingn the registry as recommended and still get this error message.

I can make a new file and save it in W2007 format using Safe Mode of Word and can open it and convert it. Does this tell you something?
