Compatibility with 2000 and 2003

Erik

We are running both Office 2000 and Office 2003. We are experencing some
conflicts when saveing a file in 2003 and trying to open it in 2000. the
file saved in 2003 will not open in 2000. We have this problem in publisher
mostly but have run across a few doc and xls files that will not open in 2000
that were saved in 2003.
I know I can do a save as 2000 format in 2003 to ensure compatibility but it
would be better if the users do not have to worry about this.
I have also tried the conversion pack and that did not work for the
publisher error.

Is this a know issue? and is there a patch or fix for this problem? Are
there any sugestions?

Thanks
Erik

Hi Erik,

In the case of Publisher its 'working as designed'.
Publisher 2000 does not recognize the Publisher 2003 file
format/features such as those listed here.

Word and Excel 2000 through 2003 use basically the
same file format, but newer features exist in
the newer versions of each. Do you receive specific error messages
when you can't open a file?

In general, in a mixed version environment using the
prior version as the default file save format or compatability
settings for the lower version is a safer course where
you know the documents may need to be shared and keeping
both versions current through the latest service packs plus
any hotfixes that address specific issues you're hitting.

Hey Bob,

I unfortunately do not know what the errors were. The system that gave the
error was in a rush to production and the files were saved as 2000 so that
the user could do the work. i have not been able to reproduce the error yet.

Do you know of a way I can set the Default Save as type to 2000 on the 2003
install?

So the users do not have to choose and it will save in the compatible file
type all of the time.

Thanks
Erik
