% Complete VS % Work Complete

Hi

I am a little confused here and will be thanful for guidance.

We wanted to use % Work Complete to track project progress and uncheck
the calculation option update task status updates resource status from
Options -> Calculations. When team members sent update and PM accept
that Work complete is update and %Complete is not. Thats Right.
1. Tell me one thing when i set a task %Complete to 100% it
automatically set 100% to %work Complete. Why
2. What if PM decide after setting task to 100% that some more work is
required and PM set the remaining work to some value. The %complete
and %Work Complet both changed to 99%. Why
But if the task has summary it shows some other value why...

Correct me if i am wrong
a. if i set %complete to 100% Project will set my Actual Work and %Work
Complet to 100% Right. (yes/No)
b. if i set %work complete to 100% (or set remainig work to 0) it will
not effect %Complete. (yes/no)

I will be thankful if some one explains it here.

Thanks and Regards

Jerry

Jerry,

These setting are configured in your Calculations.
To modify these settings:
Click Tools, Options and then click the Calculation tab.

I would also reccommend a good book like Microsoft Project 2003 Step by Step
Part 3 Under Chapter 10 is a great resource for figuring out how to set up
your best method of tracking and updating task progress.

Hope that helps!

Scott

Jerry:

When you specify the percentage of work complete for a task, Microsoft
Office Project 2003 calculates the actual work, the amount of work that has
been performed on a task or assignment and calculates remaining work using
the following formulas - Actual Work = Work * Percent Work Complete and
Remaining Work = Work - Actual Work.

When you specify the percentage of completion for a task, Microsoft Office
Project 2003 calculates the actual and remaining duration where actual
duration is the amount of time a task has been in progress. This is
calculated according to the formulas Actual Duration = Duration * Percent
Complete and Remaining Duration = Duration - Actual Duration.

In the first case, you're telling the system to calculate work, in the
second case, you're telling the system to calculate duration. You want to
leave the option checked if you want these two to be in synch. Otherwise
you'll need to update them separately.

Most of the time, people who want to track by percent complete are most
concerned about duration because if they were going for work estimating and
resource loading, they might as well deal in hours, rather than guestimates
at percentages of work or duration. In an environment where acutal work is
inconsequential, it's best to turn off effort driven scheduling in all of
your project plans.

Thanks for the information. We are actually engineering company where
we sell Work hours and we are not worred about the duration of the
tasks. So I just turned the Resource status option to off. Here is
what i think the process will be

PM Assign Task of 8 Hours to Resource A
A will enter time sheet for 6 hours and Add note that the task is
completed is six hours.
Timesheet will show Work complete to 75% (aprox.)
PM will see the notes and instead of setting work complete to 100%, PM
will only set remaining work to 0.
Work complete will be 100%.
PM will set %Complete to 100%

Vice-Versa scanario will also be handled by this way.

I think i am moving towards the right direction. Please do inform me
incase i am mishandling it.

Regards

Jerry

Jerry:

I really can't respond to this as I don't know what your objectives are.
