Completely removing Groove 2007 from my machine

A

Art Gregory

I have accessed the instructions provided by Microsoft at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907504

I followed the instructions to the letter! I removed my Identities; I
deleted the account from my computer; I restarted Groove; I exited the
program.

When I choose CHANGE from the Control Panel > Add/Delete Programs for
Groove, I get a momentary flash of a screen stating it's setting up files,
then it disappears. If I choose DELETE, there "seems" to be more progress
with a progress bar going up to about 70% - then I get a message "Groove
counld not completely uninstall".

How do I REMOVE Groove, I don't need it and it is hosing my machine?

after you have retrieved your accounts (identities, etc) as needed - you can
uninstall and physically delete the Groove related folders.
After all that, I'd recommend using a registry cleaner (e.g., RegSeeker) to
remove the registry entries.
Drop me an email if you still encounter issues.

You poor guy. Microsoft has you in its clutches!

There are two perverse options. One is to call Microsoft tech support
and pay them to tell you how to kill one of their products.
Perversity number two is to buy the new Microsoft OneCare product, in
effect paying them again to clean up all their crap on your machine
that you don't want.

Of course the slash and burn option is to just delete every directory
associated with Groove that you can find. However often when you try
that you find that there are residual files that refuse to die with
this odious message:

"Cannot delete xxx: It is being used by another person or program."

Fortunately, there is a freeware program Unlocker that nicely does the
trick:

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Another nice tool to help keep dead processes is dead is Quick
Startup:

http://www.download.com/Quick-Startup/3000-2086_4-10386377.html?cdlPid=10764401

If you see anything Groove related, you can zotz it out of startup.

Finally, here is a third free utility that more easily allows you to
kill processes that are already running:

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cprocess.html

If you see anything running that is Groove related, you can use this
tool to zotz it with alacrity.

Nice gesture to send those guys a few shekels if their products work
for you.

Good Luck,

SteveM
