Componentize Office

Do you think Microsoft Office should be componentized? And what else should
Microsoft do?

Even better for people but not businesses, since there are a wide variety of
workers needing different features, is to buy only the components you need.

but I am talking about the componentization people demanded back in the
Office 97 days.

It wasn't demanded.. it was cheaper.. there were office suites before MS
Office.. Lotus Smartsuite was first in Windows, I believe.. but DOS saw
Ability/Ability Plus, Lotus Symphony, Gem and others.. Lotus Works and MS
Works have been around for a while too.. probably better suited to home
users in as much as they are less daunting featurewise.. having said that, I
found the early integrated suites to be annoyingly difficult to use..

If you look at the different versions of Office, you will see that not
everything is included in all versions.. and as far as I know, the
components making upf MS Office have always been available as separate
items..

It's not like you can go back to 1997 and observe what people are doing.
There have been 3 versions for Windows and 3 versions for Macintosh
released since then, so you aren't making a whole lot of sense.

Strangely enough, Microsoft is in business to make money. Given that, you
can expect that they will offer products in whatever combinations they
feel make sense in terms of sales. Complaining about this, especially in
peer-to-peer support groups, is unlikely to accomplish anything.
