Can anyone tell me how to 'compress photo files' for use on a web page using
MS Front Page...is it possible or do I have to use photoshop or some such??

Thanks for any help with this.

You would have to use PhotoShop or other application

I use the program that came with my digital camera to reduce all
photos that I'm going to use on websites to 640x480. I then open them
in Paint & save again. This brings the size down to 40 to 100kb. next
I use thumbnails sized large enough for viewers to see the image (120
pixels high), so that they only click the images they want to see in
more detail.

Every lossy format picture will degrade a little each time it is resaved.
Although re-sizing and re-saving may reduce a few bytes in the process, you
have no control over the amount of degraded quality of the photo. It is not
the same as optimization, which will reduce byte size to as much as
one-tenth or less of the original byte size while maintaining much higher
quality than just re-saving. Paint is not capable of compressing graphics
and allowing you to adjust the quality as does PhotoShop or similar graphic
program.
