Compressing images

H

Herbert Eppel

I found (archived) instructions for how to deal with images in Word
files efficiently at
<http://web.archive.org/web/20080116.../itanswers/microsoftoffice/word/filesize.html>.

This is what the instructions say:

**********************************************************
To remove unnecessary image data:

1. Right-click an image and select Format Picture… from the resulting menu

2. The Format Picture dialog box will be displayed (above right). Go to
the Picture tab (it should be the currently-displayed tab)

3. Click the Compress... button in the bottom-left corner
**********************************************************

The instructions appear to refer to Office 2003. It doesn't actually say
so, but I'm concluding this from the fact that the crucial Compress
button doesn't appear to be available in Office 2000 :-(

Is there a way to do compress images in a Word 2000 document 'manually',
i.e. without the Compress button?

Thank you.

Having not user Word 2000 for 8 or 9 years (though it was one of my more
favourite versions of Office), it is difficult to be sure, but I am almost
certain that the Compress images dialog was introduced in Office 2003.

I've never been a great fan of editing graphics inside Word because it tends
to retain the original graphics so that you can Undo your edits. I've always
resized and reset the dpi in a free graphics utility (IrfanView)before
inserting into Word to keep the documents to a minimum size.

The best NG for the question is microsoft.public.word.drawing.graphics.

Thanks for your reply and the pointers.

Yes, I too tend to edit (and resize) graphics before inserting them into
Word docs, but I'm trying to sort out this situation for a friend who is
struggling with a document he created using Word 2000 that has now grown
to 50 MB =-O

I'll follow this up at microsoft.public.word.drawing.graphics as
suggested by Suzanne.
