Computer freezes

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

When I open some files that were created or saved in the 2007 PC version of Word, my MAC computer locks and freezes. I have to force a quit to exit Word. This has become an annoying but sporadic problem. Is there a problem with the compatibility between the PC files and the MAC files? Could this be a snow leopard issue?

It's actually a Word PC issue. The early versions of Word 2007 are writing
bad code that Word 2008 can't read.

There is an update out for Word 2007 to fix it, which your originator has
obviously not applied.

But the latest update to Word 2008 enabled Word 2008 to cope with the dud
code that Word 2007 is writing.

Update Word 2008 and all will be well.

Cheers

I'm running Word Mac 2008 with the latest version: 12.2.1, but I still have this problem. The Microsoft site indicates that my Mac software is up to date. I have not checked for updates on the PC machines, but they have generally been on automatic update status.

Sorry, I have no more to add.

The problem you describe is consistent with a missed service pack in Word
2007. If there is another cause, I don't know about it.

Cheers

PMFJI, but if John's response about updates isn't the issue & this happens
only with "some" files, it then becomes a question about those files
themselves. Even though the file format is fully compatible it doesn't mean
that the file *content* is. If you can determine the nature of that content
-- especially if there are graphics involved -- it may go a long way toward
explaining the problem. What happens if the sender Saves As a .doc & sends
you a copy of that? [I'm assuming the files in question are .docx although
you haven't specifically stated it.]

Another approach if you're receiving the file as email attachments: What
happens if the sender zips the file & sends the zipped attachment?
