Conditional formatting

I want to apply a conditional format so that when I enter
the letter A followed by a number the cell will go a
particular colour. I want this to happen no matter what
the number is. I want to know what to type in the
condition box. I've tried everything I can think of but
can't get it to work. I'm sure it's very simple so sorry
for being daft but would really appreciate any ideas.

enter the following formula
=LEFT(A1,1)="A"

if A1 is your cell to format.

=AND(LEFT(A1,1)="A",ISNUMBER(--MID(A1,2,256)))

I couldn't get that to work.
If you try Is Greater Than " " it works but you could
enter anything at all and it would change.

Hi Peter
this works for me. If entered as formula in the conditional format
dialog (for cell A1) it colors the cell only in the specified cases?
