Connection failure

I am trying to link an Access front end database to an SQL database on a
website. The website host provided me with a user id and password, plus the
IP address. I have tried to create an ODBC datasource using the information
he provided. I keep getting a connection error:

Connection failed:
SQLState '01000'
SQL Server Error: 14
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 14

I have also tried to ftp to the site and I get:
530 Login incorrect.
! Login failure, so quitting

I feel like this is related to the user ID and password, but the website
host says he has done it correctly. It should be simple!
