Contacts groups

Outlook has no construct that it terms "group." State what you mean by it
and what you are trying to achieve.

Outlook 2007 - go menu -contacts-
look on left side -navigation pane- link in blue for "new group".
You click on it and New group appears at the top of the navigation pane. I
have figured out how to get rid of it. But not how to use them. For example:
most of my contacts are business related buy I have a few family and friends
I'd like to put in a separate group but can find no instructions on how to do
this.

That option simply lets you create different groupings of entire Contact
Folders. If you want to create different groups of Contacts you would use
Categories or separate Contact subfolders, whichever meets your needs
better:
