"Contains" in conditional formatting

Is there a way to set conditional formatting to respond when a cell contains the text "msg" somewhere in the body of text in that cell?

Yes, use a formula like

=NOT(ISERROR(FIND("msg",A1)))

enter the following formula in the conditional format dialog
=ISNUMBER(FIND("msg",$A$1))
and choose your format
