Contents disappear from slide in PowerPoint 2003

When I receive presentations via email that were created
in a version lower than 2002/2003 all the contents on
many of the slides will simply disappear. What is causing
this? Can I avoid or correct it?

Have you installed Service Pack 1? Go to Help > Check for Updates and follow
the links for Check for Update. That should resolve the problem.

I've tried a couple of times to install it--without
success. I don't have problems with other Microsoft
updates.

Well, it is necessary for you to apply the update. I'm pretty sure it will fix
your problem. What happens when you try to do the update?

Maybe it's already applied. Go to Help > About Microsoft PowerPoint. Does the
version line at the top end with SP 1?
