are you referring to tools => options => general => enable autoconnect ?

I don't see tools = options = general = enable autoconnect (PowerPoint
2003 SP2). My frustration is that I rarely want to draw the same e.g.
box multiple times -- I want the arrow pointer after I've drawn one
shape.

As far as I'm aware, this is default behaviour and you can't change it.
"ctrl+1" is the shortcut for the Pointer tool, which might help instead?
Al is refering to 2007 functionality, which I must say I thought you were
talking about as well.
