is there a way to control powerpoint slides from a host
machine sending it serial commands to advance slides?

What about using some "remote control" software?
Connect using a LAN, then you can control the show remotely. Seeing what's
on the remote desktop on your screen!

It's probably possible but it would take some serious programming to make it
happen.
