Can I use group level security to change the visible
property of form and report controls? I wish to hide or
restrict some of the data on a form based on which user
group they belong to.

Yes, you can read the permissions of a logged in user and change whatever
settings are available. There is sample code in the Security FAQ regarding
how to determine user permissions, and I'd encourage you to obtain a copy
and read it, then read it again, the try your hand at security on a COPY of
your database.
