Hi. I am trying to convert a 2003 DB to a 2007 DB and keep receiving the
following error message. Ideas?

"You attempted to open a database that is already opened exclusively by user
<name> on machine <name>. Try again when the database is available. (Error
3356)"

Tried this and got the same message. Its almost as if the error is generated
because the databse is open, but I don't know another way to convert the
database from inside the open 2003 version.

What do you mean that you're trying to convert the database from inside the
open 2003 version?

The directions to convert the database in help, tell the user to open the
database, then to perform a save-as function, selecting the Access 2007
option:

"Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Open.
In the Open dialog box, select and open the database that you want to convert.
Note If the Database Enhancement dialog box appears, the database is
using a file format that is earlier than Access 2000. To continue, see one of
the sections that follows: Convert an Access 97 database, Convert an Access
95 database, or Convert an Access 2.0 database.

Click the Microsoft Office Button , point to Save As, and then, under Save
the database in another format, click the file format to which you want to
convert.
If any database objects are open when you use the Save Database As command,
Access prompts you to close them prior to creating the copy. Click Yes to
make Access close the objects, or click No to cancel the entire process. If
needed, Access will also prompt you to save any changes.

In the Save As dialog box, type a file name in the File name box, and then
click Save.
Access creates the copy of the database, and then opens the copy. Access
automatically closes the original database."

Try creating a new (empty) database in Access 2007 and importing everything
from the Access 2003 database. You'll have to manually add any database
properties you've set (start up form, title, etc.) and any additional
References you're using, but it should work better than converting.

Mr. B said:
Try rebooting your maching. That will close any open files.

Sometimes you can get a database open that you cannont see.

I suspect running taskmgr and canceling any msaccess.exe that you find
would also work. This happens to me occasionally.

I also received the "You attempted to open a database..." error 3356. Then I
realized that I had set the 2003 DB to start up displaying the Switchboard. I
changed the Startup Display to "None" (which can be done in either version),
closed and re-opened the 2003 DB, and the conversion went successfully.
