Convert a Publisher file into Front Page for a website

Dick Stanley

I have created a website using Publisher 2003 SP2 but I am not happy with the
result. How can I now convert this into a Front Page 2002 SP3 publication to
improve the website

Publisher html code is very different than FrontPage code, and there is no
good way to import Pub code into FrontPage. You will need to rebuild the
site in FP, though you should be able to copy and paste many of the design
elements and the text from Publisher.

Yes...except for Copy/Paste. You'd want to Drag/Drop or Import for images,
and Copy/Paste Special for text - or Copy/Paste into Notepad, then
Copy/Paste that into FP for text.

no prob.

for an excercise in terror; about a year ago there was a poster here that
had a pub web she was trying to salvage into fp. i was bored so i downloaded
her site and gave it a shot with fp...impossible, especially since ONE page
had over 30,000 LINES of code!

| Thanks for the clarification. ;-)

I appreciate you jumping in with your experience with both FP and Web
Expression...I know little about either.

Ah, yes, the ol' code bloat issue with Publisher. What do you expect...it
takes a lot of code to convert a DTP document into html, especially when
MSFT throws in VML and XML. ;-) I wish there was an easier way to move from
Publisher websites to FP or now Web Expression or SharePoint.

That's part of the reason I prefer the much simpler and basic html coding
engine in Pub 2000. The html files it produces are far lighter...but are not
any easier to import into FP.

I doubt that it will ever happen, especially since EW's emphasis is on
producing standards compliant code. IMO MS should never have made Pub able
to produce webs.

IMO, MSFT should have kept it simple as it was with Pub 2000 and prior
versions. When they added it to the Office group, they took a basic coding
engine and messed it up. The original idea was good I think. If you were a
beginner, a hobbyist, or a small business that already used Publisher for
DTP and producing marketing materials, and only wanted a web presence in the
form of a simple, small, static website, and did not have the time to learn
new software, or the budget to buy the software or hire a site built, the
ability to produce webs was handy. You could simply convert your marketing
flyer to a web page...you could post your location, services and contact
information. You could use the DTP skill set you already had to build a
basic website. I think that MSFT also planned on people moving on to FP when
they got more serious. Unfortunately, they didn't plan the migration well.

You will never find me arguing that any large web development should be done
with Publisher, but I do think it can be a good choice in some cases, and
that FP and EW would be overkill and unnecessary. And I have seen some very
effective sites built with Publisher...code bloat and all.

Rob,

I've downloaded a few Pub web sites using WebPlus (a Serif product) and
they imported fairly easily, without any bloat. Perhaps it gets the
generated code rather than the original source code.
