Convert mm-dd-yy to mmm so pivot table reads mmm not mm-dd-yy

How do I convert a date in mm-dd-yy format to a mmm format so that a pivot
table reads the mmm format, not the mm-dd-yy format?

format cell, select "Custom" from left side, in the "Type:" field, enter
"mmm" and press "OK"
