Convert text to numbers

I would like to know how to convert STA 12 + 250.92
- STA 10 +967.21 which when entered in a cell to a
numerical anser 1283.710. Excel will not due the
subtraction it comes back with a # value

How do your get 1283.710 from the numbers in your example? Are STA 12 and
STA 10 defined names?
