Convert Word document into Template

I need to convert a Word document into a Template. I went through the Office
Help suggestions; going into file, save as, template document, etc but that
didn't change anything.
I'm trying to complete this, but completely stuck. Any suggestions would be
great!

So what didn't happen when you did File-Save As-Word Template? What did you
THINK would happen? What do you mean by "that didn't change anything"?
Change WHAT?

That's where I'm confused. My boss claims I'm supposed to be able to click on
a word and add onto that area.
I can move things around. Is it supposed to appear as more of a read-only
document? As in, users can access it and use the template, but only add-on,
not change the format?
I'm well aware I sound stupid; it was handed over to me and this is
definitely not my area of knowledge, so I'm just getting really flustered and
nervous.

OK-They want people to be able to open the document and type in the boxes,
but not change the format. I'm trying to format the restrictions; does that
make more sense?

Did you ever get this resolved? I noticed that nobody responded after 8am.

read the post from JoAnne - the OP doesn't want a template - he needs a
protected form....

Sort of! I know how to "lock" a document, but the formatting restrictions
were asking me to choose which areas I want to lock. I'm not technical
enough to recognize any of it, so I was/am a little stuck there.
I'm hoping a computer tech comes into work today and I can get some help!
Thanks for replying!

You need more than just locking the document. You need to create a form
using the forms fields. If the document does not have any forms fields, by
locking it, you won't be able to make any changes to the document. Well, of
course, you need to unlock it if you need to make changes. It takes a while
to make a form depending on how familiar you are with Word.
