Converting and using Access 97 to Access 2003

Hello,

I am a real novice at Access and have been given the task to convert and
make available for use an Access 97 database. Our current setup is Access
2003 on Windows XP Professional. When I try to open the 97 database it tells
me "The current user account doesn't have permission to convert or enable
this database."
Also, 97 database is sitting on a network location, but the 97 Access
program itself is installed on a NT Terminal Server with multi-user logon
that requires a username and password to open Access 97. On our current XP
workstations, we just have Access 2003 which does not prompt for any
passwords or user names.

I visited MS website and looked up KB Article 288960 but that did not help.
We need this DB up and running as alot of our project tracking is done thru
it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The 97 database is secured. You need to copy the workgroup file (.mdw) that
was used to secure it. You can then join that workgroup (tools, security,
workgroup administrator), open 2003 and convert your database, logging in as
a user that has full permissions.

A better solution though, would be to unsecure it in 97. Then convert it,
and resecure in 2003.

To unsecure it, open it in Access 97, logging in as a user with full
permissions.

Go to Tools, security, permissions and grant all permission on every object
(don't forget database object).
Exit Access, and reopen it using the standard system.mdw workgroup. Create
a
new database and import all the objects from yours. Then open 2003 and
convert this database. Then resecure using 2003.

Thanks so much. I tried it and it worked. At first I couldnt figure out the
workgroups but after creating a new one from the workgroup administrator it
was pretty straightforward. Thanks again.
