Converting iCal (mac) .ics files to Outlook .vcs files

A

amikkelson

I am in the process of converting the information that I have on my mac
to my window's office machine. I have successfully converted everything
but my calendars. iCal only exports in .ics format. I tried to the
import/export wizard in outlook and came up with an error message:
"vCalendar/iCalendar Import Failed. The input file may be corrupt."
(however, I know that the file isn't currupt). So I then changed the
file extention to the .vcs format and ran the import/export utility and
it came up with the same error message. Now I'm stuck!!! I would love
any suggestions to get the problem solved. I have too much data in the
calendars to manually key in.

Thanks

You've written here to an Entourage newsgroup. Entourage will import iCal's
..ics files just fine. If you're talking about the entire-calendar
multi-event .ics files that iCal exports when you Export Calendar (iCal in
Tiger also exports single events dragged out of iCal to desktop as
single-event .ics), you'll need Entourage 2004 11.2 (SP 2) to import those.

To make this simple for eventual import into Exchange and Outlook, set up
your Exchange account in Entourage 2004, and make it your default mail
account in Tools/Accounts/Mail. (You can change it back to something else
later on.) If you don't have an Exchange account, omit this - and see below.

Do a Get Info an an .ics file (control-click and choose Get Info, or select
and cmd-I). In "Opens With", change the app to Entourage. (If you don't need
to open .ics files in iCal again, now click the "Change All" button so all
..ics files will open in Entourage. Otherwise you'll have to do this on each
..ics you want to import into Entourage.)

Now drag the .ics file and drop it onto the Entourage icon in the Dock. All
the events will be imported into your default Entourage calendar. If you
made an Exchange account the default mail account, they will be imported
into your Exchange calendar, and within minutes will sync to Exchange and
Outlook. Without categories.

If you do not have an Exchange account, they will import into your single
local Calendar. You can get my script package "Export-Import Entourage" from

MacScripter.net <http://macscripter.net/scriptbuilders/>

and follow the instructions in the ReadMe for exporting your Entourage
calendar (or just by category or selected events) to Outlook.

If you need to sync iCal to Entourage or Outlook on a regular basis, you
might want to check out my "Sync Entourage-iCal 2 [TIGER]" (or [PANTHER])
script at the same place. It will be a lot easier than trying to keep track
of which events you have added or updated.

If this is just one time, and you don't have Exchange, you can just select
all the events in the "All Events" calendar view (left column in the
Calendar area) and drag them to a folder on your desktop. (Actually, use
shift-click to select and drag fewer than 200 at a time, or you may lose
some.) Zip the folder and bring it over to Windows. Then select the .ics
files there and drag or otherwise import them into Outlook.
