Converting text to a number

I am trying to do a sheet containing Holidays and Absence my problem is
that if you only have a 1/2 day holiday my formula is counting it as a
full day I need to do.
H = 1 day holiday
HH = Half day holiday
So ideally if they had 1 1/2 days holiday it would show as 1.5 but I do
not know how to do this.
I would be really grateful if some one could help me and show me
whether to use countif or not and how to do the formula.

=COUNTIF(A:A,"H")+COUNTIF(A:A,"HH")/2
