converting text to numbers

I am trying to create a spreadsheet that I will input an "A" and it will
convert to $4.00. Can anybody tell me what function to use?

How about:

=if(a1="A",4,"")

Format as currency.

That's good for only one or a few with more IFs in there. But if you
have many of these, it's probably best to set up a little list/
database of them somewhere in the file. Then use a VLOOKUP to get the
right number.
