Copy and Paste Word To Indesign

I posted the same topic on Adobe's website, but I thought I'd check here as well to see if maybe the issue is with Word. Here's the deal...

When we copy text from Word (v12.2.4) and paste it into Indesign (v6.0.4)we get non editable text. Basically an image. When we open the same document (.doc, .docx, compat mode, etc...) in Text Edit, works the way it's supposed to.

Anyone seen this?

Thanks!

Yeah, this is not uncommon...

Advanced applications (Word is one...) don't actually put "text" on the
clipboard, they put a "menu of formats".

When another advanced application (e.g. InDesign...) "pastes" it actually
makes a "request" of the Clipboard. The clipboard responds with "You can
have several types of data, here's the menu, pick the one you would most
like."

I suspect InDesign is choosing "Picture" for some reason (maybe because your
selection includes a picture...). Word then makes a picture of what you
copied and hands it to InDesign as a bitmap.

You can either use Paste>Special> and read the menu yourself and choose the
correct format, or you can save the document and use InDesign's "Import"
command to bring it in.

Hope this helps

Well, your not imagining it, that's for sure :) I'm seeing similar behavior
with ID 6.0.5, but it's sporadic. I haven't been able to identify any
particular pattern to it though. Copying the same content from the same Word
document, pasting into the same ID document seems to be a crap shoot. I've
tried several different Preference settings in ID without any change

It makes no difference which tool is selected in ID or whether you create a
text frame to paste into. Sometimes the content pastes as an image,
sometimes it pastes as text. If I paste the same thing repeatedly each
instance mimics the previous, but I can go back to Word, recopy the same
content & when I return to ID it's likely to paste the opposite as what it
was doing before.

I'm reasonably certain for at least several reasons that the problem is with
ID. For one thing, it's the target app that determines what/how to paste
based on what's available from the clipboard. Second, I've looked at the
content of the Clipboard itself & it's identified as text. Third, if I paste
the same content into Pages or into any other type of document I get the
text result - even when the same stuff pasted into ID as a picture
immediately before.
