I now find when I want to copy a file and paste it the paste command is
greyed and I cannot paste. How can I change this please?

What are you pasting? Text? Pictures? From what source? Does the problem affect all paste operations in Word, or just a single document?

Thanks for your reply. I am trying to copy a file which is just text and
the file is selected from a list of files contained in a particular folder.
It applies generally when using Word
I can use copy and paste successfully using Excel

As a troubleshooting step, see if you can paste in Word if you start the application in Safe mode.

To start in Safe mode, hold the Ctrl key as you start Word; when asked about Safe mode, click Yes.

While in Safe mode, create a new document (for example by pressing Ctrl+N), type something, copy it to the clipboard, and then see if you can paste it in Word.

I don't know if I have carried your instructions exactly but I succeeded in
copy & past commands

Since copy and paste appears to be working in Safe mode, the underlying issue is the registry (less likely in this case though), code in the Normal template, or a poorly designed add-in. Try renaming the Normal template; if that works, then you are done. If it doesn't work, you need to isolate the add-in that causes the problem. See the relevant portions of the article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541/en-us/ ("How to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word 2010, Word 2007, Word 2003, or Word 2002").

Have you tried using Ctrl-C to copy and then use Ctrl-V to paste?

Are you saying that the keyboard shortcuts are working but not the Copy
and Paste commands on the ribbon?

Yes the keyboard shortcuts are working but when I try to use the Copy and
Paste commands from the action list they do not work. The paste command is
greyed. I do no know what ribbon means?

Strange. Usually it shouldn't matter where you access a certain command.

I guess you are not using a recent version of Word? In Word 2007 and
2010, the ribbon is the groups of commands at the top of the Word window
(labeled Home, Insert, Page Layout, etc.) which replace the main menus
of older versions.

It's still annoying that the issue remains unresolved! :-(
