OK, this is probably a rookie question, but:

I am using inserted symbols (x's and checkmarks) for numerous tables. Is there any way I can copy both these symbols (onto the clipboard?) and set up a hotkey (i.e., one for pasting Xs and another for pasting checkmarks). Currently, I am repeatedly copying using open apple + C then pasting using + V. This is becoming tedious, because the tables have a lot of columns and rows, and the position of the X's and check marks is always changing.

Is this what the clipboard is even used for? Thanks for any help.

Copy one of the characters. Holding the cmd key and clicking each cell
you want to paste into. Then one paste and they should all be where
they belong.

Hope this helps.

You can't use the clipboard that way but there are other alternatives. In
order to make sensible suggestions, though, it would help to know the
specific nature/source of the "symbols" you're using. Are they graphic
objects, actual font characters... ?

Two options that come to mind right off are (1) the Add Objects> Symbol
group of the Formatting Palette Just click the character you want to insert,
or (2) the OS X Character Palette - double-click to insert the desired
character. Either of the palettes can be left open for convenience.

An alternative would be to assign the symbols as AutoCorrect items.
