Copy WORD text in Outlook

I have to copy and paste WORD text in Outlook TWICE to make the PASTE work.
The first time I try to paste, I get a pink square graphic icon instead of
the text. I have to delete this goofy-looking icon, and try again. Any ideas
what's happening and how to make the COPY & PASTE work the first time?
