Copying a single cell to clipboard takes about 45 seconds

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I work with some large (locally stored) worksheets, e.g. 30,000 rows x 20 columns. I have 4GB of RAM with about 1.5 GB free right now. When I try to copy the contents of a single cell (~15 characters of text) to the clipboard, it can take 60 seconds or more for the silly spinning wheel to stop spinning. I've taken all the available updates. What is up with that? Excel Mac is mostly unusable for my purposes.

There are two issues that will slow Excel 2008 to a crawl:

HP Printer Drivers,

Large and complex workbooks.

If all of the following is true:
* You are using an HP printer
* Your paper size is not US Letter
* You are using Page Layout View;

Excel is like treacle in winter.

The cure is to change any one of those options. E.g. Work in Normal View.

Excel 2008 has not been properly optimised when it was built (they didn't
have time before it had to be released) so it is far slower than they
intended. This can hurt with large and complex workbooks.

Try some of the following:

1) Switch the spreadsheet to XLSB format. XLSB is a compressed binary
format designed to overcome just this problem.

2) Work in Normal View. Turning off the "pretties" releases a lot of
power.

3) See if you can simplify that workbook to reduce the amount of
calculation going on in the formulas.

4) Buy Excel "Next" as soon as it comes out. It will be dramatically
faster, because they have had time to work on it.

Hope this helps
