"copying" in any office prog, it inserts "screenshots" not text

P

Pastormiles

When I attempt to copy text from one Office program (say from Word to
Powerpoint) to another, the "paste" is a "screenshot" or picture rather than
the text I intended. This just started 'out of the blue'. I used to be able
to cut and paste with no problem.
Any ideas of how to fix this?

Are you getting a true screenshot, or are you getting an icon or something?

This is usually caused by an add-in, or sometimes something running in the
background. Let's start with add-ins, though -- have you installed any
lately? If you're not sure, you can search for *.PPA files and rename them
to something like *.PPO to disable all your PPT add-ins.

Pastormiles

I searched and there are no files listed as *.PPA. And, yes, they are
actual "screenshots". Here is an example of what has happened:
I have a slide open in Powerpoint with a text box open and text in it. I
then open a Word document and highlight the text I want, right click and
choose copy. I return to the Powerpoint slide, highlight the text that is to
be replaced by my "copy", right click and choose paste. The resulting
replacemnet is a picture of the entire screen view that was present in Word.
I am still able to type text into the Powerpoint presentation, but cannot
transfer info from anywhere else.
In addition, When I attempt to use the slide show mode in Powerpoint, it
is extremely slow in performance making presentation difficult.
Thanks for any further suggestions on this.

Hm. This is very strange.

What if you highlight the text in Word and use Ctrl+C to copy?

I'm thinking you may have a utility or program of some sort (perhaps a
graphics application) running in the background on your system, and it's set
to do a screenshot on right-click+copy. It's a long shot, but it doesn't
hurt to cover all bases.

You might also want to go to Start|Run, type in msconfig, and turn off most
of the programs that load at startup. See if that resolves the issue.

I'd also suggest going to Help|Detect and Repair in either Word or PPT. That
may clear things up. You should also run a virus scan and a malware scan.
You can use the free Ad Aware Personal to scan for and remove malware.

Does this problem only occur when pasting into PPT?

Echo S,
Your exact suggestions did not do the trick, but a variation did and is
allowing me to continue to use Powerpoint and Word. With your idea that the
right-click function might be corrupted, I simply tried using the 'edit'
drop-down menu in each program and it's copy/paste functions. As a result I
can again copy and paste within and between programs.
I still don't know what the problem is, but I now have a workable fix and am
thrilled.
Thank you for your assistance and time in helping me with this.

There has to be something causing the right-click screenshot, though. I
wonder what?

Anyway, I'm very glad to hear you found a workaround you can live with.
Thanks for letting us know!

I have got the same problem.
If I use an external keyboard plugged to the USB port of my laptop
(running windows xp tablet) then the copy and paste are screwed up.
Having the num-lock key down causes any arrow key to work as "print
screen" key.

Try this:
Run C:\Windows\System32\Clipbrd
you'll see realtime what is on your clipboard.

do a simple ctrl-c on text
it will copy correctly on clipboard

press any arrow or page-up/down key
it will copy a screenshot.

I have got no solution to this problem!

My problem is exactly the same as this below. Surely, MS has a solution.
I'm using a wireless K/B and Mouse whose receiver is connected by USB 2.0.
If I disconnect these components and use strictly what came with the notebook
(Compaq 2000 series), the keyboard functions all work fine.

Any Hotfixes known? Any help you folks can give me would help a bunch.

it I have been having this problem, more specifically, if I copy some text
from ANY source and then immediately paste it into an office program it works
fine. However, if I copy and then go to Word and scroll down a page or go
back up into the middle of the document and hit Ctrl V or the paste button I
get a screenshot.

That sounds almost like an add-in or screen grab utility causing problems.

Do you have this problem with USB keyboards/mice, too, as the other posters
described? If you disable that and use the laptop keyboard and mouse, does
the problem go away?

I do have the same problem. My keyboard and mouse are connected via a USB hub
to my Gateway laptop. It doesn't happen if I use the laptop keyboard and
pointer.

However, this just started happening in the last 30-60 days so there must
have been some MS update that is causing the conflict.

You might try updating the drivers for the mouse and keyboard in question.

I am also having this problem, using a desktop computer, Windows XP, and Word
2003, which is part of MS Office Pro 2003.

Only difference for me is that my clipboard will fill and refill repeatedly
with a screen shot of the page where I try to copy text.

I have tried uninstalling Office and reinstalling. I have also tried doing
Start|Run, typing in msconfig, and turning off the programs that load at
startup. in addition, I have tried doing Detect and Repair in Word. I have
also scanned for malware (Malwarebytes) and for visuses (TM Internet
Security)-- niether found problems.

The problem recurs.

I also was using a wireless keyboard and mouse. When I switched them out to
a USB wired keyboard and mouse, the problem so far has recurred once, but I
was able to clear the Clipboard and it did not refill. This is a change from
what happened when using the wireless board & mouse.

I would appreciate any other suggestions.
